A Step-by-Step Explanation

The Weekly Topic Poll enables many thousands of topics, (initiatives, issues, and proposals etc), to be discussed simultaneously, in a manner that is self-regulating, fair to all, and everyone participating can easily see what the most important issues are currently and why they are so important, 24/7.

Each week, our community discussions, are re-ordered in the order of priority via the Weekly Topic Poll (which can be found on the Home page).

The local community forums are populated by people posting topics to them for discussion. In response, they get comment and likes or dislikes them. That kind of activity can make a topic rank as very popular, but it might not be a very important topic.

In order to continually determine what our most important current topics are. each topic has a VOTE BUTTON. If you feel that a topic you are reading is very important you can vote on it. (You can vote on as many topics as you want.)

The WEEKLY TOPIC POLL
On Sunday at midnight, the admins take screenshots of all the votes and then they publish a new page on the front page of the Joburg CommUnity website called MOST IMPORTANT TOPICS with all the topics ordered as per the votes over the past week.

All the votes are removed from all the posts and the next week starts afresh each Monday.
The admins also publish a pdf document listing the vote results and that page is stored in the Archives for future referencing.

In this manner, everyone can always know what the most important current topics and by implication, those items will get our prime consideration.

This ‘Re-set’ not only helps to hold the group’s focus but also prevents certain people from trying to affect the results of the discussion by hogging the conversations with excessive commentary etc.
Only the votes count.
Everybody can vote on as many topics as they want. If you don’t have much internet bandwidth, you only need to search for the topics that interest you and vote on those- you don’t have to participate in all the discussions.
The process is designed to find our COMMONALITY…. If someone makes many votes or not it doesn’t matter- The only important votes are those that get the most supporters.
THUS USING THE INTERNET LESS, BUT MUCH MORE EFFECTIVELY.

There is no reason why disputes need to escalate to the level of protest or petitions
if we are all better connected.

Anonymity is another vital aspect of this forum concept.
Not everyone feels free to speak out in their own voices at times, because doing so could have serious repercussions.
Any forum member can request a second anonymous identity.
Although that person’s identity is never revealed, in terms of the law, it is a legal identity of the person using it.
